Un tema affascinante per quanto riguarda la storia dell’informazione è certamente la censura. È sempre esistita, anche all’epoca del manoscritto. Lo storico Crebuzio Cordo, nel I sec. d. C., venne condannato, il suo libro bruciato e l’autore spinto al suicidio. Gli storici potevano suscitare paura negli imperatori, dando una loro lettura dei fatti. L’imperatore Diocleziano, nella repressione della Comunità cristiana, fece bruciare numerosi manoscritti.
Poi aspetteremo il ‘500, quando Enrico VIII diede ordine di distruggere circa trecentomila volumi manoscritti. Ma finché esistette il manoscritto, la censura fu limitata, essendo limitato il numero dei libri.
La censura aumenterà con il nascere della stampa. Nel 1559 nasce l’indice dei libri proibiti più famoso, emanato dal Pontefice Paolo IV, preceduto da altri meno famosi e pubblicati da diversi sovrani nei loro regni.
Per esempio, la Chiesa proibiva la lettura di libri che sostenevano l’inferiorità della donna rifacendosi ad autori di epoca pagana. Condannati i libri sul duello, considerato un peccato mortale, oppure, libri come quello di Sepulveda che difendeva la libertà di fare schiavi gli indigeni, rei della pratica di sacrifici umani e il cannibalismo. Lo si potrà leggere solo nell’ ‘800.
Nel settecento cadranno nell’indice libri pornografici, materialisti. Ma le condanne erano una specie di grida manzoniane. Molto clamorose, ma raramente portavano a condanne vere e proprie. I libri più osteggiati, ricorda lo specialista Infelise, erano quelli riguardanti la stregoneria …
