Il brano evangelico secondo Matteo (3,13-17) ci invita a raggiungere il Precursore, che sta battezzando presso il Giordano. Pure «Gesù dalla Galilea venne per farsi battezzare da lui», trovando l’opposizione del profeta: «Sono io che ho bisogno di essere battezzato da te, e tu vieni da me?». Volgiamo ora con attenzione lo sguardo su un settore della straordinaria serie di mosaici che rendono impareggiabile la «Cappella Palatina» di Palermo. A metà del XII secolo, lo sconosciuto artista ha composto la scena del «Battesimo di Cristo», la seconda manifestazione di Dio in Gesù di Nazareth.

Il capo di Cristo che tutti guarda e benedice, è contornato dall’aureola con la croce sulla cui sommità s’appoggia lo Spirito: «egli [Gesù] vide lo Spirito di Dio discendere come una colomba e venire sopra di lui». Sulla sponda sinistra del fiume, il Battista contempla lo Spirito, mentre, sull’altra, il mondo celeste, due angeli con sandali, vesti fluenti, ali, aureole, fissano lo sguardo su Cristo e reggono dei panni molto decorati a coprire le mani in segno di rispetto.
