All’inizio del nuovo anno, potrebbe essere bello proporsi di guardare con occhi diversi le immagini che ogni momento scorrono innanzi. Posare lo sguardo, sostare, per coglierne l’anima, la visione profonda che riservano
all’occhio attento, che ne coglie la lettera, e all’occhio interiore, che ne dichiara il senso morale, allegorico e anagogico (San Bonaventura, Le tre vie ovvero l’incendio d’amore, Prologo) attraverso un senso letterale che non è solo cronaca.

Tutta la realtà del mondo è un quadro dipinto da Dio, quindi dobbiamo avere un senso <estetico-spirituale> per afferrarne il significato. Ciò però esige che il cuore sia purificato: per mezzo del combattimento spirituale contro i pensieri e i sentimenti malvagi e, positivamente, per mezzo della carità. (Tomáš Špidlík S. Lo studio, da solo non basta, benché l’esercizio dell’intelletto richieda studio e ascolto. Lo stesso Natale, nei suoi misteri più umili, come la visita dei Pastori, ne offre chiaro esempio. Quegli uomini, per niente poetici o spirituali, ma sempre emarginati, e spesso di malaffare, seppero guardare con occhi diversi un bambino che poteva sembrare solo uno tra i tanti, non appena l’Angelo recò al loro orecchio l’Annuncio. Il mistero dell’Incarnazione nell’Immagine del Verbo invisibile

Il mistero dell’Incarnazione si manifesta all’uomo gradualmente, per immagini, e così, nel corso dell’anno liturgico, esso si prepara dall’Annunciazione, il 25 Marzo, per emergere sempre più vivo nelle domeniche di Avvento, incantando il fedele nelle celebrazioni della notte del Natale, della nascita, tra il 24 e 25 Dicembre di ogni anno. Secondo il Prefazio II della Liturgia Romana …

Nel mistero adorabile del Natale,
egli, Verbo invisibile,
apparve visibilmente nella nostra carne,
per assumere in sé tutto il creato
e sollevarlo dalla sua caduta.

Generato prima dei secoli,
cominciò ad esistere nel tempo,
per reintegrare l’universo nel tuo disegno, o Padre,
e ricondurre a te l’umanità dispersa.

 

Proprio il mistero dell’Incarnazione, che si svela nel tempo, è a fondamento della creazione, dell’universo in Dio, e ciò che sembra divenire nel tempo, da sempre è, e, secondo la Sua Immagine, tutto è ed esiste.

Questo mistero di comunione tra il visibile e l’invisibile è al centro della Parola scripta, ma anche della Parola celebrata nella liturgia e adombrata nell’immagine sacra, che possiamo ritenere Parola picta.

 

Dal visibile all’invisibile aprendo gli occhi. L’anima della fede teologica di Mons. Timothy Verdon

La Chiesa, sempre  consapevole della missione affidatale da Colui che si fece carne, visibile, conduce gli uomini verso l’invisibile, Colui che è da sempre, e mentre attende la Sua venuta, la prepara nei segni efficaci dei sacramenti, nelle relazioni caritatevoli della comunità, e nelle sacre immagini . Queste non sono solo opera didattica, didascalica, ma, a loro modo, quasi sacramentali porte dell’eterno sul tempo, del divino sull’anima.

Mons. Timothy Verdon, sacerdote statunitense, Direttore del Museo dell’Opera del Duomo di Firenze, – da anni scruta con competenza e de-vozione quel mistero  illustrato non solo nella sacra Pagina- indica la Parola, la liturgia e l’immagine sacra come intimamente connesse nel mistero celebrato, così che: Le immagini sacre non sono «… immagini meramente didattiche. Nella concezione cattolica, l’arte ha un ruolo più importante, arrivando a toccare l’ultima realtà della persona»1.  Guardiamo, registriamo pure il senso della cosa guardata, ma non lasciamo che l’esperienza visiva oltrepassi il livello nozionale per toccare i sentimenti, per commuovere, per imprimersi nel nostro spirito.  … la fede giudeo-cristiana …(è) una “beatifica visio”, consiste nel vedere Dio. Tale visione che rende beati comincia già nella vita presente, come suggerisce una preghiera che il salmista rivolge all’Altissimo: Aprimi gli occhi perché io veda le meraviglie della tua legge” (Sal 119/118, 18). … “Un tempo non si poteva fare immagine alcuna di un Dio incorporeo e senza contorno fisico”, ricorda il più strenuo difensore delle immagini cristiane, san Giovanni Damasceno, evocando il divieto biblico ed ogni raffigurazione della divinità. “Ma ora Dio è stato visto nella carne e si è mescolato alla vita degli uomini -continua-così che è lecito fare un’immagine di quanto è stato visto di Dio” 2.

 

L’opera d’arte sacra nel suo senso cristologico

Occorre cogliere il contesto cristologico dell’opera d’arte sacra e non solo antropologico, la concezione dell’uomo centrata sul Salvatore. Infatti, insegna Nicola Cabasilas, non è il vecchio uomo (Adamo) ad essere esemplare del Nuovo (Cristo), ma il Nuovo Adamo (Cristo) è  l’esemplare del vecchio3.

Per imparare a credere ciò che si celebra, dunque, non solo suggerisco la lettura dei tre magnifici volumi de L’arte sacra in Italia, edito da San Paolo, ma anche il volume Attraverso il velo. Come leggere un’immagine sacra, edito da Áncora del 2007.

 

Partendo dai suddetti presupposti, e non solo guidato da criteri estetici e storici, l’Autore qui  riscrive la storia dell’arte, di per sé in massima parte cristiana, nella fedeltà al contesto spirituale in cui ogni opera fu pensata ripresentando lo stesso mistero anche ai posteri, a noi contemporanei. Di poco precedente  questo testo, e precisamente edito nel 2002 e 2003 con Mondadori, Vedere il mistero. Il genio artistico della liturgia cattolica offre un panorama metodologico completo del pensiero del professore e Maestro. L’autore affronta venti secoli di liturgia cattolica nella messa,  nei sacramenti, nell’ adorazione eucaristica facendo scoprire una creatività artistica di primo piano, non solo dell’architettura, della pittura e scultura, ma anche per quanto concerne il livello a noi meno noto degli oggetti dell’altare, dei paramenti sacri, delle fonti battesimali. Qui si racconta la storia del genio artistico, ricostruendo attorno alle opere d’arte il clima contemplativo da cui nacquero.

 

La Bellezza nella Parola

Ad esempio di come si possa meditare nella celebrazione il gesto liturgico, che ospita la Parola e risplende dell’immagine dipinta, sono di grande aiuto i tre volumi, Anno A, B e C de La Bellezza nella Parola. L’arte a commento delle letture festive, in cui Mons. Verdon aiuta a riconoscere i simboli che gli artisti dalle Scritture hanno trasposto nelle loro opere. Egli commenta i testi biblici di tutte le domeniche nei diversi tempi liturgici (Avvento, Natale, Quaresima, Triduo Pasquale, Pasqua e Tempo Ordinario), facendo precedere al testo scritto una tavola a colori, riproducente un’opera d’arte essa stessa commento ai testi. Inoltre, all’inizio di ogni tempo liturgico, viene proposta una introduzione che aiuta il lettore a comprendere il mistero dell’anno liturgico.

Nell’Anno C, commentando la solennità della Sacra Famiglia, Mons. Verdon propone la miniatura di Turone di Malaxio, di fine sec. XIV, Gesù nel tempio tra i dottori, conservata a Verona nella Biblioteca Capitolare al Corale MLVII, f. 56v.

Avviata la riflessione sul mistero di fede, si ricostruisce l’ambiente storico dell’evento in raffronto con le parole dei Vangeli. Si cerca di penetrare la psicologia di un Gesù chiamato ad una speciale missione. Si vede in Samuele nel Tempio il tipo di Gesù. Ma in Gesù non sono i genitori ad averlo portato, come fu, invece, per Samuele, ma vi andò Lui, di sua iniziativa, novità del Nuovo rispetto all’Antico. Anzi la Madre gli disse: “Figlio, perché ci hai fatto questo?” suscitando in Lei sconcerto. il punto dell’evangelista ha a che fare con le esigenze contrastanti della figliolanza divina e umana -con uno scambio unico, misterioso ma anche imbarazzante, le cui regole andavano definite strada facendo. … Gesù, che sapeva bene di essere il Figlio dell’Altissimo, (…) doveva ancora imparare ad essere Figlio della donna che gli parlava dell’angoscia … È il momento evocato nella miniatura trecentesca riprodotta qui:Gesù in mezzo ai teologi che egli sbalordisce con la sua intelligenza soprannaturale, mentre la madre e Giuseppe gli ricordano i doveri naturali della figliolanza umana. Sono splendide qui le mani di Maria, che si allungano con un impeto irresistibile verso il ragazzo, prendendo già la forma tonda del suo viso fanciullesco, per accarezzarlo …” (Da La Bellezza nella Parola. Svelare il progetto

Ma al percorso celebrativo del fedele nella Chiesa visibile, si affianca il percorso più intimo e riservato dell’anima, che, allora, può essere accompagnato da opere come il Michelangelo teologo, oppure, il Beato Angelico. In quest’ultima opera, particolarmente, l’Autore traccia il percorso che fra’ Giovanni da Fiesole illustrò nelle quaranta celle del Convento di San Marco in Firenze. Volume editorialmente splendido, Beato Angelico vuole cogliere, affresco per affresco, il nesso teologico e interiore di una scala verso il Paradiso, che accompagnava il religioso domenicano.

Sappiamo che nei secoli gli studiosi si sono costantemente chiesti che senso potesse avere quel “disordine cronologico”, evidente negli affreschi delle celle, senza trovarvi plausibile risposta. Il Nostro rintraccia proprio nella incongruente alternanza delle  scene, caratterizzata, però, se vi si facesse caso, da visioni di luce e di buio, la chiave per entrare nel progetto dell’Angelico4.

Il singolo affresco, illustrante il mistero, guida il religioso in quella Discesa agli inferi della cella 31 al riscatto nella Crocifissione della Cella 4, o nell’ incontro trasfigurante del Noli me tangere della Cella 1.

Se non potesse bastare, dunque, la visita diretta ma veloce, al Convento di San Marco, il graduale peregrinare tra le pagine di questo libro potrebbe aiutare uno studio meditativo via a sempre nuove scoperte.

 

Il Credo nell’arte cristiana italiana

Camminando nella valle di lacrime, il credente potrebbe vacillare nella fede, ed allora, ecco anche un aiuto a comprendere e a vivere il Cedo attraverso il volume di Roberto Mastacchi, Il Credo nell’arte cristiana italiana, introdotto da Mons. Verdon, che presenta l’immagine come predicazione evangelica, come si espresse Papa Benedetto XVI5 -del quale Mons. Verdon fu assiduo collaboratore-. Va anche detto che proprio Mons. Verdon indicò quali immagini inserire nel Compendio del Catechismo della Chiesa Cattolica, voluto da Papa Benedetto XVI.

 

Il nostro contributo

Potremmo citare altre interessanti opere di Mons. Verdon, ma la cosa più bella potrebbe essere profittare della visione del museo che egli dirige a Firenze, leggere i suoi libri utili alla formazione dell’uomo di cultura come del credente e anche invitare la  biblioteca del proprio territorio a dotarsene perché altri possano avere la stessa opportunità che noi abbiamo avuto.
